Imagine a world…

I typed in keywords “guns” “children” “war” “images” and Google gave me more than I bargained for.

These Palestinian boys in the photo are playing soldier with toy guns, a result of the reality they see every day.  I know a soldier who was in Afghanistan and he and his fellow soldiers were being approached by a group of people including a boy with a gun.  The boy was instructed to stop repeatedly (in English and in his native language) but he did not.  As he continued to approach the American soldiers, he was shot and killed in self-defense.  The soldiers later realized it was a toy gun.  The boy was twelve.

Earlier today I was watching more of the gun control debate on television and I thought to myself “Imagine a world without guns.   Imagine a world without violence.  Imagine a world where everyone is cared for, provided for or taught to provide for themselves, where everyone has physical and mental health care…”

Then I thought that those thoughts were sounding like the beginning of a potential post.  Then I realized… it’s already been written.

Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try.

No hell below us. Above us only sky.

Imagine all the people living for today.

Imagine there’s no countries. It isn’t hard to do.

Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.

Imagine all the people living life in peace.

Imagine no possessions. I wonder if you can.

No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man.

Imagine all the people sharing all the world.

You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one.

I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will be as one.

R.I.P John Lennon

  1. …and we continue to take action, hope and envision this world full of peace. thank you for including my post here. <3 peace+ love.

  2. It’s enough to bring tears to your eyes. I wonder if we’ll ever get there.
    thanks for the pingback

  3. Contrary to popular belief, Imagination (and not love) is the greatest power on earth and the beyond. Imagination is the catalyst that sparks all and everything.

    And your poem sings true.

Now, if we can take that Imagination to the next step…

    Peace, Eric

  4. confronting image isn’t it..thanks for the pingback

  5. You bring some valid points to the table…Perhaps if enough of us can start with imagining living life in Peace we can also get to that worthy goal someday. Beautiful sentiment. Thanks for the pingback. Peace is the word!

  6. What really makes this sad is, some validity to the phrase, people kill people. After all a gun is harmless without someone to use it. However, guns make it easier for people to kill people. Killers, and murderers would find a way without guns but, it would be more difficult.

So guns don’t kill people may have some validity but, just as valid if, not more valid, people with guns kill people.

Thank you for the ping back, and helping to keep the peace.

  7. I cannot ‘like’ this post, but I read every single word of it.
